It's cool to see how your practice changes the longer you stay with it. When I first started, I mostly did whatever I my schedule would allow for, but I'd say it was 60% Forrest and 40% vinyasa and other styles. I'm glad I had Forrest has my base because it taught me how to breathe and use my breath and gave me so much appreciation for moving slower.

Now I'm almost exclusively Ashtanga (though I do "surface" from my practice every now and then for classes with a handful of teachers that I really like). I've learned a lot about how to do my own practice and teach myself. It's also a place where I've gotten to integrate a lot of the things that I've learned from all the other styles and teachers I've practiced with. Which is exactly what a "self practice" is supposed to do ;-)

I'm really glad that you're building your home practice, sounds like you're already starting to learn a lot :-)Tarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06228584620424781533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4942671737985296053.post-75200969489109266792011-12-07T23:24:40.109-05:002011-12-07T23:24:40.109-05:00Tara, thanks for the great post and suggestions – ...Tara, thanks for the great post and suggestions – I think we hear them in various classes but somehow it helped me to see them here all listed out in one place. I have had a similar experience in that when I first started practicing, I was able to drop in very easily, and this continued for me until very recently. It is definitely hard to practice in these circumstances but almost more important … even if I do not think I am going to enjoy it. Forrest has also been AMAZING at helping me drop back in – this past week I am thinking of in particular… not sure if I can attribute it to longer holds, more steady breathing, or the instructors (gotta love Peter and Nicole!) but it’s interesting now how I am drawn to this style when my first few months I practiced vinyasa exclusively. I have also been working on my home practice (difficult in a dorm room, but enough space for my mat and some viparita karani) which seems to be helping, just to know that the space is mine to do what I want with it…. as long as I just get onto my mat in the first place ☺Beccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05277800591861161262noreply@blogger.com
